چکیده

The current microdevices used for biomedical research are often manufactured using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology. Although it is possible to fabricate precise and reproducible rectangular microchannels using soft lithography techniques, this kind of geometry may not reflect the actual physiology of the microcirculation. Here, we present a simple method to fabricate circular polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) microchannels aiming to mimic an in vivo microvascular environment and suitable for state-of-the-art microscale flow visualization techniques, such as confocal microPIV/PTV. By using a confocal microPTV system individual red blood cells (RBCs) were successfully tracked trough a 75 microm circular PDMS microchannel. The results show that RBC lateral dispersion increases with the volume fraction of RBCs in the solution, i.e. with the hematocrit.

Evaluation of Cardiac Function in Patients with Brain Death using Advanced Hemodynamic Monitoring

Background: Studies on hemodynamic changes in brain death are in vitro and in animal studies. And very few studies have been done on the hemodynamic changes of brain death. The aim of this study was to use advanced hemodynamic monitoring with echocardiography for evaluation of donated heart and to evaluate the moment by moment brain death patients with advanced hemodynamic monitoring tools and ...

Microfluidic Platforms with Micro- and Nanopore Membranes for In-Situ Formation of Lipid Bilayer

This study presents a stable and flexible method for fabricating an integrated microfluidic system with lipid bilayers formed in a free-standing SU-8 membrane. For the fabrication of the SU-8 membranes, a combination of imprint lithography and a sacrificial layer technique was employed in order to obtain a clean, fully released, and mechanically stable membrane with perforated pores. The membra...

A NUMERICAL STUDY OF SINGLE-PHASE FORCED CONVECTIVE HEAT TRANSFER WITH FLOW FRICTION IN MICROCHANNELS (RESEARCH NOTE)

Three-dimensional simulations of the single-phase laminar flow and forced convective heat transfer of water in microchannels with small rectangular sections having specific hydraulic diameters and distinct geometric configurations were investigated numerically. The numerical results indicated that the laminar heat transfer was to be dependent upon the aspect ratio and the ratio of the hydraulic...

Cell-Free Layer (CFL) Analysis in a Polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) Microchannel: a Global Approach

The cell-free layer (CFL) is a hemodynamic phenomenon that has an important contribution to the rheological properties of blood flowing in microvessels. The present work aims to find the closest function describing RBCs flowing around the cell depleted layer in a polydimethysiloxane (PDMS) microchannel with a diverging and a converging bifurcation. The flow behavior of the CFL was investigated ...

Numerical Simulation of Passage of a Neutrophil through a Rectangular Channel with a Moderate Constriction

The authors have previously presented a mathematical model to predict transit time of a neutrophil through an alveolar capillary segment which was modeled as an axisymmetric arc-shaped constriction settled in a cylindrical straight pipe to investigate the influence of entrance curvature of a capillary on passage of the cell. The axially asymmetric cross section of a capillary also influences th...
